hi,

i'm looking to replace the dodgy cd/dvd drive in my 500MHz pismo with a cd-rw drive.

not too bothered whether it reads dvd or not, as it never gets used for dvd.

anyone got any suggestions for a fairly basic option and for places to buy in the UK?

cheers

dave

There are some good deals on eBay. I saw a bare drive available for around £80. You have to remove the old drive from the Pismo's expansion bay casing then install the new drive for it to work, though.

An ideal choice is the Lite-On LSC24081 24X CDR/DVD module commonly available for around $90US. It is fully supported in Apple finder burning and iTunes for Panther, slips right into the caddy with four screws (three minute job), and faceplate almost matches Pismo. Google search will show many sources, including eBay sellers.

I bought last week a TEAC DW-224E-A for my Pismo 400 MHz since my previous burner (Matshita UJDA710) failed. Is easy to install, fits quite well even without the face-plate from the original drive with a small gap under the bezel (I am probably going to replace the face-plate when I have more time although this will need some modifications to the original faceplate). It is bootable, burns CDs 24x, CDRW 24x and also reads DVDs at 8x. Works with Apple drivers (no modification needed) under Mac OS X 10.3 and is bootable.

I got mine for about 120 EUR at www.avitos.de (in Germany).

I will side with the LiteOn as well since it just drops right in and is issue free. No syst file mods needed at all (burn in finder, iTunes and Toast of course).

The Lite-On also has a switch on it to select as "master" so no soldering of pad traces needed (won't boot CD if not set as master).

I have the Matshita drive, which works ok in OS9 using modified files for iTunes, etc.

It does not work in OS X 10.3 without significant changes.

Anyone know where to order the TEAC or LiteOn drives in the US (without going to ebay)?

Lite-On LSC24081 at: BananaPC.com, AllThingsTech.com, Compuvest.com, PCboost.com, gearxs.com, AVlogic.com. Be sure exact model is listed, mine was LSC24081M. Stock and model availability varies.
