I have a two year old iBook 600. Today the oddest thing happened. Their is now a red line of pixels running from top to bottom on the middle of the screen. The odd thing is the pixels light up red if they are supposed to be any color but white, in which case they act fine. It makes no sense. The only thing new about the computer today is a new apple brand ac adaptor which I purchased because the old adaptor broke (the wires came apart). I doubt its related. Any ideas?

Sounds like a hardware issue. I would take it in to get checked.

Just FYI on why it "works" on white: Each pixel on the screen has a red, green, and blue element. These three light up with various levels of intensity to form all the colors you see (so purple would be high red and blue, and little to no green, for example). To display black, none light up. To display white, they all light up. So, if your reds are stuck "on," white will appear normal when the blue and green light up to match.

Its now stopped. No idea why. A restart didn't stop it. Switching to OS 9 didn't stop it. It stopped when the screen dimmed for power saver mode. It did come back for about five minutes the next day though

If it happened after a restart and also in OS9, then it's definitely hardware. It may have been a one-time anomaly, but I would still get it checked now before it goes out completely. Especially if you still have warranty or AppleCare coverage.

Slap the left hand side of your iBook near the mouse. You don't have to kill it, but be firm. If the same problem manifests itself...you definately have some hardware issues.

The other check is to experiment with angles. Move your display back and forth to see if anything happens. You could just have some loose wires
