I have a 366mhz Clamshell special edition (SE), with a 10 gig loud as hell HD and 320 megs of RAM.

I want to upgrade to a 80GB Hitachi Travelstar 5K80 5400RPM 9.5mm drive. and max out the RAM slot with a 512meg SO-DIMM chip.

I have all the pertinent info about the install of the hardware. and have confirmed that they are compatible with the clamshell. also I will be putting the 10 gig HD in a 2.5 enclosure to use as backup.

what I need some help on is

1. the best way to transfer the data (ie CCC cloner, burn it or what).

2. what kind of stuff can I do to test the upgrades to make sure they are working properly?

3. any other advice

thanks

1) If possible, I'd put the 80 GB in the enclosure first, then fire up CCC, clone your 10 GB drive to the 80 GB drive (making sure you tell CCC to fix your permissions and make the clone bootable). You shouldn't erase either of the drives after this (so you have two copies of your stuff, just in case), at least until everything is installed and proved functional.

2) After you do the upgrades, you could use the hardware test cd that came with your iBook, or you could use a utility like TechToolPro that will give your hardware a very extensive test.

3) Not really. I'm curious about the speed gains, though.

i just did the same thing with a pismo, new drive in an enclosure, CCC, install new drive, boot and voila!

first boot up resulted in a flashing question mark for about 5-10 seconds, then it recognized the new drive and all was good.

OS X.2 FYI...

I upgraded my old blueberry with a 30 gig. If the HD isn't recognized automatically just go to disk utility and do a format. My heart dropped for a brief moment when that happend to me. Changing out the HD was a bit of work I would have hated having to change it out again.

I agree with der Kopf on his suggestions.

Did the newer clamshell have a hardware test CD? My original blueberry model didn't come with one.
