well so i getting a 12" g4 ibook in 3 or 4 days!!!! my first mac ever, but being a life long pc user i'm a little concern about not getting the hang of it right away. so if anybody can help me (and i know you can) i have some questions, i know some will sound stupid but well, where else can i go?:

1. is it posible to dowload things like mp3's and stuff like that the way i do it in a pc? (right click, save target as..) or is there a special way to do it?

2. does itunes rip cds? you know, turn .wav to .mp3?

3. does it include all the software to write and erase cd/cdrw?

4. how about divx files, can i still see them?

for now it's all i can think of but i really would be very thankful if i get some answers.

thank you all

hey what's up!
i get my iBook tomorrow (first mac also), but i believe i can answer most of your questions

1. do you mean in a web browser? for downloading files to specific locations you can control + click (or right click with a 2 button mouse) and choose that option.

2. YES OF COURSE!

3. YES and it is MUCH easier than Windows (it is just built right into the OS, you can just drag stuff on and off)

4. Divx can be played with quicktime - it may require the downloading of a codec though, which is easily attainable from an simple google search, or maybe divx.com, although i havn't checked.

Hope this helps! Have fun with the iBook!

cable modem - check
dialup - check

go for the airport extreme (802.11g), and get a G router like from Netgear or Linksys. Nothing like surfing from the couch!

AFAIK, control-clicking with a one-button mouse on a Macintosh® is functionally equivalent to right-clicking with a two-button mouse on a PC.

In addition, you can use a two-button USB mouse with a Macintosh®, and it will work in the same way as on a PC.

2. does itunes rip cds? you know, turn .wav to .mp3?
Yes, no problem. See Apple - iTunes - Burn CDs for more information on burning CDs/DVDs with iTunes™.

3. does it include all the software to write and erase cd/cdrw?
Yes. You can use iDVD for this purpose. See Apple Enhances Consumer Desktop Lines to learn more about that topic.

4. how about divx files, can i still see them?
Yes. See Apple - Downloads - Video - DivX 5.1 for more information on that topic.

for now it's all i can think of but i really would be very thankful if i get some answers.

thank you all

it'll prolly run it, but a PB may be a better idea since it has more cache and a faster memory bus. can anyone with real-world experience on this speak up?

1. Just ctrl-click or use the right button on a multi-button mouse. Where to: You can set a default downloading folder in the apps you're using.

2. iTunes rips CDs. The default is to make AAC files (.m4a), other options are .mp3, .wav and .aiff. You can also burn playlists from iTunes.

3. You can either use Disk Utility to first make disk images, then burn them, or you can just pop in a blank CD, then move the files and folders that you want to burn onto the icon on the desktop. (But you might be interested in a program like Toast if you need more advanced options. Apple's are relatively light-weight.)

4. For .divx there's a plug-available. But you should also search for VLC at Versiontracker. It will play plenty of formats.

Setting up networking is usually very simple. If you're on a network with a DHCP server, the Mac will get assigned an IP address and you're ready to go.

Just delete any programs you don't use.
Adobe Acrobat, Omni stuff, Quickbooks or whatever you get....

You don't have to worry about uninstall, just Delete...

Make make sure you really don't need the programs first b/c it can be quite bothersome to re-download everything.

For your cable, really all you need to do is plug it in...

In terms of Final Cut Pro... Good luck... I saw it being used by the film guys at school... Its way too cramped...

If you do a custom install of OS X, you can choose not to install other languages, drivers for printers that you'll never use, and Asian fonts, among other things.

It won't save you that much though. (Some hundred MBs.)

If you reinstall everything, there's probably an Applications disk that contains all the third-party stuff. You don't need to install everything from that disc.

If you don't want to reinstall, there's an app called DeLocalizer that can remove the language packs. You can use DesInstaller to remove printer drivers. (These are both unsupported.)

If you don't want to keep an app, just drag it to the thrash and empty.
