Well, I just received a new 17" powerbook three weeks ago, and it was working perfect until today. My superdrive will not allow me to insert any cd/dvd etc. I've talked with Apple's tech support, and reset the NVRAM, and the PMU, and still nothing. No, there is no disk inside, and it did work perfectly until today. Anyone else had this problem??? If so, any thoughts on how to fix it?

Yes, I too have experienced a superdrive problem with my new 17" 1.33 powerbook running panther--just purchased from apple store 2 weeks ago. In my case I had inserted a DVD (was the new Macworld total panther DVD--go figure), into the slot and the icon did not show up on desktop. Tried holding down eject key and restarting, but no response or sound in superdrive. So, I contacted applecare and did a few tests until I was instructed to open firmware and type in "eject_cd" then return which kicked out the disk. Then typed in "reset-all" then return and restarted. All seems ok now with cd's and dvd's running properly, however, the sound of the superdrive is extremely loud upon any disk insertion. Is this just a one-time deal or should I be more concerned? Applecare case logged...

Well, I wasn't really looking forward to sending in my powerbook just before Christmas, so I played around with it last night and I managed to solve it.

I went into iTunes and clicked on the actual 'eject' button. Immediately my superdrive started making some noises, and it now works perfectly again. Before this I had tried to eject with the button, through the finder, through the dvd player, and by holding down the trackpad button while restarting, and nothing happened. So this seems to be a simple solution, and if it works for anyone else, please let me know. Oh, I also turned off bluetooth, and uninstalled Warcraft III, but I don't imagine either of these did anything.

Interestingly enough, this is not my first problem with iTunes, which has been the only thing not to work perfectly all of the time. On a couple of occasions when iTunes was open when my powerbook went to sleep, I have been unable to use iTunes again until after a restart. However, this is a very small problem, and it only seems to occur about 1 in 5 times at most, and everything else still works perfect. Overall, I am still extremely impressed with this computer.
