Each time I run install on my iBook (640MB RAM, dual USB version), during verification of the install disc on reboot, the verification failed at 75% and a message appeared asking me to restart and check the disc for scratches/dirt. I cleaned the disc, but the same problem occurred.
To test the discs, I ran install on a friend's 12" 867 PB and they ran fine. I cloned the discs and re-ran them on the iBook and this time, the verification error occurred at 5%! I can't go beyond that point.
I tried to install using an external USB CD-ROM (Liteon) but on reboot, the installation stopped (I pressed Option key) and a symbol like a non-entry sign appeared on the screen, and I can't proceed.
I have no such problem with the Jaguar discs.
Help?

Forgot to mention that I have tried as well to remove the additional RAM chip as i was told that Panther is somewhat sensitive to 3rd party chips, but the same problem happened.
Is it possible to copy the installtion files to the hard disk and install from there as I could with Windows on an XP box?

I installed panther on my 500 mhz white ibook.
On the 2nd disk I go the error message that I had to restart. So I did that like 5 times and each time it quit at the same point (but on the 2nd disk, just when it was installing printer drivers and languages).
It seems to be working fine (I don't use it to print anyhow), but I never did get the drivers or languages installed.

Lucky you! At least you can install Panther from the first disc. I can't!!
Anyone else who may have had this problem and found a way out? I tried to connect (with a firewire cable) the iBook to the PB and then use target mode (i.e. pressing T key on reboot of the iBook). On the iBook screen, there appeared a Y logo on a blank screen, but on the PB, I do not see the iBook's hard disk. I was thinking to use the PB's superdrive to install Panther onto the iBook. Anything wrong with the cable?
I am going a bit crazy here. Please help, guys!

Is that an archive and install ? or did you tried to installed from scratch?
I have heard people with problems doing the update installation. Nevertheless, they fixed it by installing it from scratch (format and installing).

I have tried Upgrading, Achieve & Install & Clean Install - all with the same result. It's as though the disc is bad and unreadable at that point, but how come the superdrive of the PB can read it fine?
I am beginning to think the combo drive is a bit flaky, but really, up to this point, I have never had a problem reading any CDs or write to CD-Rs/CD-RWs with this drive.
is it possible to copy the disc contents to the hard disk and install from there?

You need to boot from the CD or at least not from the drive you are installing to.

I think you should call Apple. What really is strange is that even using the external CD rom drive didn't worked, nevertheless on the PB worked fine.
Have you tried doing a clean install to your previous OS (Jaguar I assume)? I'm just curious if it will cause you a similar error.. could be that you HD might be failing.

I have a similar problem trying to install Mac OS 10.1 to my Power Macintosh 7500 using XPostFacto.

I installed Panther on my 700mhz iBook with no problems.
MacDizzy--what kind of disk was the one that you originally tried--a newly purchased full version, a version that came with another machine or a "cloned" copy? If it was a copy, I think people often have problems at one stage or another using copies of OS X.

I bought the set of original Panther discs at an AppleCenter. Since these didn't work on the iBook, I tried to use a cloned copy, but with similar results. I don't think it's anything to do with permissions (I have repaired those using the original Jaguar installation disc) and I have even run the cron jobs and updated prebinding.
I have verified the 'defective' Panther disc under disk utilities of the iBook, and there were no errors, yet when I installed Panther, the stupid thing told me it failed verification (of the disc, not the hard disk). I spent $129 and can't install Panther on my iBook! Urggg...

I think you should return them and get a new set of disks, just to definetly rule out the possibility of having deffective disks (althuogh they work on the pb) when you try them again.
