I thought the Superdrive in the 1GHz 17" ALBook was a DVD-RW and CD-RW drive.

Was I mistaken or is there a problem with my setup? System profile shows I have a Matshita DVD-R UJ815 drive.

Is my drive DVD read only?

That would really suck.
If there were no God, it would be necessary to invent him.

The drive you have will read CDs, DVDs, and also burn CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R and DVD-RW discs.

Apple only officially supports DVD-R burning (IE, write once discs), but I have used DVD-RW (write and erase to write again discs) in my Powerbook drive with no problems. I have the same model drive as yours here in this 15 inch Powerbook.
