i just started using a mac (no more HP pavilion for me) and since i am totally inept with just about everything, i am trying to figure out why the brightness gets turned all the way down randomly. This happens when i shut down the computer and start it back up again (usually after a while).

And any input on useful programs and tricks and things would be helpful, since i am a big ole newbie.

you mean you need to change the brightness manually each time? or is it just the fact that the screen is black (and turns on again if you move the mouse/hit a key) because of the energy saver settings (in this case, you can just have a look in system preferences, in energy saver, and change the settings for power adapter and battery if you don't like it).
