My friend has an iBook 600, the DVD/CD is a Matsushita SR-8176, since two days, when he tries to read from a cd or dvd, the iBook tries it for three times and then eject the disc. So, is it bad?, maybe must he get a new one?, from Apple? ($$$) :-D

I did not found the dvd/cd drive on pbparts, only a expensive combo, and since he has an external lacie burner, a combo is a non sense.

What is your experience and advice?

powerbookmedic has combo drive and cd-drive, is too hard to find the dvd drive?

You might be able to find something on eBay. Search around and see if someone has just the drive for sale. Or, you could look for a broken iBook "for parts" and take the DVD drive from it.
