I have just re-installed itunes and it finally works, and I have been able to install the ipod software with no problems. Synching has worked perfectly with audio files already in my library.
_My problem is that when I insert an audio CD the following message appears:
_"You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To continue with the disk inserted, click Ignore"

On reading another thread I created another user and I was able to access the CD as per normal.
_Any ideas on which file needs reparing or replacing for the original user set-up in order to avoid having to copy everything over

Have you tried repairing permissions the catch all solution). My 9660 file got repaired once (it was a new/updated file at the time). Improper permissions could cause something to work fine in one account, but not so fine in another.

Yep. I've repaired permissions quite a few times, but no joy.
The drive itself works if I wish to backup data - just not music.

So, are you saying you've tried burning an audio CD?

This is a problem that was happening (or sounds like) with factory software installed iBooks. One fix is to move the preferences folder to the desktop, reboot and it will make a new prefs folder and the problem with audio cds should be fixed.

Another solution which fixes that and .dmg files not mounting, is to reinstall panther from its cds and not the software restore ones.
