Can anyone tell whether you can buy AppleCare anywhere or must you purchase it in your own country? I noticed a tremendous price difference between US Apple Store and European ones.

Not sure if you can buy across countries ... but if you can, you should buy from Smalldog rather than the Apple store. Their prices are $20-$50 cheaper and they ship internationally.

If you go to the Apple Store, click on AppleCare (on the left side), and select any plan, there's a link to a "Terms and Conditions" PDF. It says, " This Plan is offered and valid only in the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, Canada, Brazil, and Mexico. This Plan is not valid in any other country or U.S. territory. This Plan is not available for Florida consumers or where prohibited by law."
So, that would lead me to assume that you must buy an AppleCare plan specific to your country/region.
