I am sorry, another one of those iBook-sleeping subjects. I have not seen this in the forum before:
Our 12" G4 iBook is super except for that it can't sleep when the power connected. It will enter sleep, change it's mind and wake up, try to sleep again, wake up, and so on. Running on battery there is no problem.
What is this?

Are there any USB devices attached?

No, it sleeps fine both with and without mouse plugged in, and with and without cd in the drive. It doesn' really seem to matter.
I take it we are the only ones with this problem.

This is a long shot but maybe just maybe the power management settings are messed up. You can try playing with the slider in the power management section of the system preferences or try resetting the Power management unit, reseting the PMU varies depending on what model of iBook you have check the Apple support page they have docs there.

I am experiencing a similar thing with my iBook. It sleeps fine when it is not plugged in. It will also sleep when plugged in a left open. However, if I close it while it is plugged in, it will enter the cycle you described of trying to sleep, waking up, etc. I reset the PRAM as someone on another forum suggested and this did not do anything. Any other ideas?

hmm, the only time my iBook becomes narcoleptic is when I try to use it in clamshell mode, still trying to figure that one out.

I had the exact same problem and just found a fix. Delete the preference "com.apple.PowerManagement.plist" and don't make any changes in the energy saver preferences pane. It looks like some kind of bug with 10.3.2. I deleted this preference file and all is now well.

I just realized that deleting the preferences file didn't fix the problem. What did fix it was removing the Markware keyboard cover/screen protector that I use. WIthout it over the keyboard, my iBook sleeps like a baby when plugged in.
The strange thing is that it sleeps fine when it is not plugged in, even when I am using the Marware cover. Strange...must be pressing up against a key, and the iBook must be more sensitive when it is plugged in?

The other thing that's been reported to keep a Mac awake under Panther is having the fax software set to receive faxes. Once you disable that, the stay-awake problems will sometimes go away.
