My friend just bought a new iBook G4/933Mhz, w/256MB DDR RAM. OS is Mac OS X 10.3.2. The CineBench 2003 CPU Rendering test and BareFeats 20 PS Actions score he got:

CineBench Rendering --> 4xx seconds
PS Actions(Photoshop CS, memory set to 100%) --> 1:45 minute

Compare to my Windows PC which is AthlonXP 1800+(1.52Ghz) w/ 512MB DDR RAM (dual channel setup):
CineBench Rendering --> 140 seconds
PS Actions(Photoshop CS, memory set to 50%) --> 45 seconds

He already set CPU performance to "Highest", but those results still make him sad. He told me that a new Mac system *SHOULD* faster than an one year old PC on Photoshop's performance, at least close to it. Since my Powerbook no longer working, I'm considering to buy a new machine for myself, but I REALLY losted when I saw his iBook's performance, even just PS and CineBench.

Try comparing your friend's result to a $1200 Windows laptop. I would guess from your specs you are talking about a desktop machine.

Plus, OS X loves RAM. Try to repeat the benchmarks with 512MB RAM.

The age of the PC isn't really a factor, but all things considered I would consider the PC to be slightly faster.

One thing to keep in mind is that OSX almost chokes with only 256MB or ram when you are using anything that requires significant power, such as PS. For what I do (lots of PS and Flash type stuff) I noticed a huge improvement going to 640 on my iBook. If you are quickly using up your RAM, you are paging out to the HD a lot. If the HD is slower, this slows down the whole system. More RAM generally speeds it all up.

IMHO though, comparing isn't the right way to buy a machine. Use it. Get to know it at the store or on a friends. If you are happy with the performance great! If not, get something else. Don't get caught up in numbers, just get what makes you happy.

It is like when people whine that their computer isn't good enough cuz a new one came out. The new one coming out doesn't make their machine any slower, and it still does everything it did the day before!

The days of macs being faster at PS are long over...

Your friends laptop should not be faster...he must just be misinformed...

Not only that but he is comparing an iBook that only has 256 megs of RAM.
