I was doing a little reading and i noticed that panther chokes with 256MB of ram so upgrading to 640 is a definite yes the only thing i am wondering about is once you have added that ram to your ibook how much of a improvement will there be if you like using programs such as Illustrator or Pagemaker? Are there any users out there that use a ibook for tasks with this line of software?
Also i am thinking about getting a iMAC as well considering the speed of the processor on the 17" iMAC this machine should be able to do anything or is there going to be a desire for something more powerful like a powermac g5 or a g4?

I do a ton of Photoshop work on a G3 600MHZ iBook... it came with the stock 128MB of ram, and I went up to the max 640MB.
For day to day stuff I didn't notice a difference at all.... but for Photoshop work and other things like that I noticed a big difference.

Yes but the 600 is only a G3 Processor. The G4 iBooks should be better at working with Photoshop and stuff.

I agree Typhoon, that is why I said it was a G3 600MHZ iBook!
G3 or G4 however, going from 128 or 256 RAM to the max allowed makes for a big difference in the handling of the OS, and in the handling of larger files and programs.

I do all my graphic design work on the following machines noted in my signature below. (yes... even the old 466 clamshell... was an affordable, portable dream when it came out) They work great, but do need the ram maxed out. It's makes a difference for larger files, such as in Illustrator. Without the extra ram, imports and exports can stall the system, if it even works at all, and you simply get the "out of memory" message.
Sure... it may take a tad longer than working on a dual g4 or g5... but the job can get done, and I save a lot of money buying consumer machines.
I also do independent short films and animations on these machines... and no problems. (well... the 466 is a bit slow with FCP 2)
From personal experience, the new iBooks and iMacs handle Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark, Final Cut Pro just fine, unless your in a large firm where they can give you a better machine... these will work on a small budget.
OS and ram... for the record... Jaguar choked more than Panther does on my systems.
