got a 14-inch iBook, 700 mhz, with airport.

It seems the antenna is busted ... or at least very, very weird. It works fine when the screen is open to something less than 90-degrees, more than 90 degrees the range drops to nothing or falls away completely.

I've swapped the card, no problem there. I'm guessing that it's going to need to go to service where someone can swap out the antenna. Anybody see another way around this?

This is a well known problem on iBooks (although this is the first time I see someone reporting this on the 14"). The problem comes from a damaged airport antenna cable which goes in the hinge of the display.

My guess is that you need to replace the cable.

Well does this problem still exist on the new g4 ibooks? Or was this issue corrected?
