I own an ibook 500 G3.

Lately my display gets brighter and lighter without me changing anything.

Like someone is playing with the dim switch on a light fixture.

I had this problem before, few months back, so I re-installed my OS and that seemed to help.

I'm just worried that one day the screen will die or it means something else.

I backup all the time, but I'm worried about losing important information and not being with a computer at this time.

I don't have applecare, and it's been 3 years... but if it died that would really suck at this time as I'm a writer and use my computer all the time.

Anyway, anyone else experience a similar problem with the display?

A follow up question as it appears I'm not alone with problems.

1) Do others have this screen problem I do?

2) If my ibook fails in the same way others have, do you lose all your information on your harddrive or can it be recovered?

At least it would make me feel better to know, that even if my computer kills itself, I can still recover the files.

If this is the backlight problem that has occured on various iBooks then your data is perfectly safe. Basically a cable is pinced in the hinge of the iBook which causes the backlight to cease working. You can shine a light through the Apple logo on the lid and will be able to still see images etc on the screen. The computer itself continues to work fine. If the screen completely craps out you can continue to use the laptop by plugging it into an external monitor, or access the data by via Firewire target disk mode using another Mac.
Good luck
Cheers Ry
