I just did a fresh install of Panther, up to X.3.2, and the iBook (Snow, 600 Mhz) seems pokey in some things...making a new Finder window, sometimes opening folders, making a new e-mail. It's as though the iBook needs a second or two to "think about it."

I'd been running Panther X.3.2 previously on the same machine, and it seemed quite zippy and responsive. I have all the same stuff loaded as before. no OS hacks or stuff like that.

I've run the Cocktail cache/cleaning routines, and no difference? Is a re-installation in order here? what could be causing this lag?

thanks!

Try Optimizing the drive with TechTool Pro 4. And running DiskWarrior. I do that after every re-instal or install of the system.

Being a student, I don't have the money to buy such software, are there any free utilities that I can run to help my sluggish computer?

Well, I ran DiskWarrior, and got some improvement.. I wonder, tho, if there isn't some other procedure that could've gotten me there, had I not already had that $100 program.

I just installed the same on a Lombard PB and haven't had any problems. Earlier installations of OSX were klunky and I learned that repairing permissions before AND after an installation or upgrade makes a world of difference. I don't have Disk Warrior or Tech Tools either (probably should, though), and have been pretty lucky so far. Hope this helps.

I can see after, but *before*. I'd think that installing or upgrading the OS would overwrite any permissions...

guess your experience points to the contrary!

I'll try your method next upgrade. Thanks!
