Hi,
I've had my 15" AlBook for just over a week now. So far it's been perfect (knock on wood) - no white spots and everything works great.. or so I thought until I started setting my desk up in the next room (about 50 feet away from my access point). Once I set up at my new desk, I discovered the wireless reception is weak.
I ran Macstumbler and found my signal strength varied between 55 (sitting within a foot of the access point) to 30 (at my desk in the other room). According to Macstumbler, 50 isn't even a strong signal. Internet Connection shows 12 of 15 bars when I'm next to my access point and drops down to 7 or 8 when I'm in the other room. By comparison, a Dell Latitude with a Linksys PCMCIA adapter has solid strength in both spots.
I've tried varying channels and turning Interference Robustness on and off, it hasn't helped. I checked to make sure the antenna's connected.
Can some of you with AlBooks do me a favor and run Macstumbler to see what kind of signal you're getting when next to your base station? I'd like some numbers to compare to before I go to Apple for support.
Oh and my base station is a Linksys 802.11b unit. I even bought another one today just to make sure it wasn't a router problem. No change, so back it goes.
Thanks
Josh

Don't pay attention to what MacStumbler says. I've had three iBooks and now I have a 12" Powerbook. In over two years of experience with these machines, a signal strength of 55 is very good. I'm 6 feet from my base station now and I too have 12 or 15 bars in Internet Connect. This is all normal. You can't compare the bars on a Windows machine to the bars on a Mac because the software is not the same.
The real test is data transfer. Download a file on the powerbook and download the same file on your Dell. Compare the speed. I bet they're comparable.

Thanks.. unfortunately, that still doesn't explain why my reception is so bad with my AlBook when it's not with other wireless devices in the same spot. If I plug my WET11 bridge into my ethernet port the throughput rate is good and consistent.. but when I switch back to Airport it's inconsistent, drops, and throughput's poor. I guess I'm going to have to put another access point in. It sucks since it's not even a hundred feet between my access point and my desk.

Have you tried reseating the antena connector on the AE card?

I suggest you bring it into the Apple Store if there is one in your neighborhood. They can immediately check if the attenna is properly connected and secured on the spot.

Must be a AE or a connection issue.
Although, I've used most major brands of wireless routers and cards and I've never seen 100' indoors without a very significant signal drop - I don't care what the specs say. I have a MS basestation at the moment and my 15" Al and my Compaq both pretty much mirror each other in terms of indicated signal strength.
