My dad's iBook G4 just made the most horrible noise. It was a *very* loud oven timer -like noise. It stopped when I shut the open Safari window. I had my ear down to the iBook and it sounded like it was coming from the hard drive, but I'm not sure. He was at the Disney website, so I doubt that the noise was coming from the site, even though it stopped when I closed the open Safari window. Anybody have any idea what this might be? I have never heard this noise come from a computer in all the years I've been using computers (about 12 years). It was pretty scary (in the sense of, OMG my iBook is dying!!).
iBook G4: 800mhz, 640mb, 40gb ("Astrid")
iPod: 30gb Photo ("Gordon"), 1gb Shuffle ("Tinker Bell")

could it be that the "power fan" came on because the ibook was getting too hot? I run temperature monitor and around 155 degrees F, the big boy fan comes on and you can really hear it. Most of the time it the fan is slow to be stealthily quiet. Try running the hardware test cd that came with the ibook and see if you hear the same noise during the fan test...

He wasn't doing anything intense, so I don't know why the fan would come on. The fan on my Dell laptop was loud like a plane taking off, and this didn't even sound like that. It was like an alarm was going off inside his iBook. It could be heard all through the house (my mom was downstairs when it happened and she heard it loud & clear). Think oven timer or some sort of fire alarm.

Why would applecare matter. The computer is less than a year old.
