No you can't. The powerbook's are designed so that they cannot operate in clamshell mode. Although you can wake it up like this, it isn't recommended because the powerbook's cool through the keyboard.

The powerbooks can operate in clamshell mode which allows you to open and close the lid without causing the machine to sleep. So while the original poster probably wanted to disable sleeping without using an external monitor, you can in fact open and close the lid without sleeping the machine if using an external monitor.

Or is you are using a mini dvi to vga will it keep it from sleeping, and how would you do this?

Just plug in a USB keyboard and mouse before sleeping the computer. Connect the monitor and everything like you normally would. Then close the computer. It will go to sleep. Then press a key on the keyboard and it will wake, even though it's closed.
