Hi trying to decide whether to get:

1. a 17"powerbook (with 1.33GHz, ATI Mobility RADEON 9600 - 64MB DDR etc)
or
2. a 12" powerbook (with 1GHz, NVIDIA GeForce FX Go 5200 - 32MB DDR etc.) + a 20" cinema display.

number 2 sounds good but I wondering - HOW MUCH SLOWER WILL THE 12" BE THAN THE 17". Any suggestions welcome...

Well the 17" also has a faster BUS speed than the 12" so the 12 " WILL be slower than the 17. depends what you are using it for. Is it going to be your desktop replacement? Also the 17 has the better video card as well. I have a 12" and for what I do with it it is pretty damn fast compared the what I had before.

Its going to be a replacement for my desktop. Mostly doing photoshop and illustrator work. I've got a 867GHz quicksilver G4 at home which runs pretty well. How do you think the 12" powerbook will compare to that machine.

I'd imagine it would be around the same speed as that machine.
LC 16Mhz • LC 475 25Mhz • Centris 650 25Mhz • Performa 6200/75Mhz • G3 266Mhz • Snow iMac DVSE 500Mhz
G4 QS 733Mhz • 17" Powerbook 1.33Ghz • 15" MacBook Pro Core Duo 2.16Ghz • Mac Pro 8-Core 3.0 Ghz

The other thing is that the 17" can hold more RAM then the 12" the 12 only hold a Max of 1.5g Gigs if you get a 1 GB chip. the 17 would be able to hold 2. depends on if you need portablity or not. Do you travel to client sites? The 12 inch will probably be a little faster than your 867
