here's the situation. I have a 1st gen iBook that needs a couple of repairs. the latch recently broke, and the hinge has the sqeaks. the broken part of the latch is on the keyboard end, and the magnet is working just fine. this 'book does not have applecare.

my question is do I hand it over to Apple to fix, try another vendor (suggestions appreciated), or fix it myself (i have a lot of experience taking machines apart, but have not attempted a portable in many years). I'm basically trying to find the cheapest alternative.

I could also live with the hinge squeak if I could easily fix the latch problem.
