After second logic board replacement on my iBook 700/Combo/12.1" I checked System Profiler in 10.3.1 and was suprised to see that now it reports that the iBook has 32MB VRAM.

Before repairs it had 16MB. It clearly is a different logic board now - this is a second replacement:

1. Apparently more VRAM (System Profiler may well be misreading the correct amount) OR a different video card. It says now ATY,RageM7 (I think it was M6 before).

2. My computer serial number is gone - it is no more found anywhere in 10.3 or 9.2.2. This was not the case after first logic board replacement in summer.

Anybody else noticed these oddities?

Hello,

I guess the repair depot couldn't get the old logic board with the M6. Good for you, I suppose.

I had my logic board replaced once on my iBook 700/14.1/combo and my serial number also disappeared from the system profiler. I called Apple about this and they claim that this is normal. I find it interesting that you say it was there after your first logic board replacement. I wonder if this is common?

After some web search it appears that NOW APPLE IS USING DIFFERENT LOGIC BOARDS to replace the ones that fail in iBooks.

The difference is another video card.

Native video card of my iBook 700/Combo/12.1" (May 2002 update) was ATY,RageM6 same as ATI Radeon Mobility with 16MB VRAM.

Now after logic board replacement my iBook 700 has ATY,RageM7 same as ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 with 32MB VRAM (used in iBooks from November 2002).

I am not sure if this is an "accident" or a permanent solution found by Apple for failing logic boards in iBooks.

Anyway, a free upgrade for my aging iBook. I wonder if it will do monitor spanning now. Will check tomorrow.

It should do the spanning as it has the same graphics chip (M7) as the 800 & 900 MHz G3 iBooks.
I'm on an 800 G3 with the M7 using spanning at the moment.
