I was wondering if anyone has encoutered this before:

on my G4 Ibook 933mhz 14":

i'll leave some programs running (like IM, etc) and i dont let the actual HD sleep, but i put on a screen saver, and a few minutes later, the display is timed to sleep. This has worked fine for about a month, since i purchased the ibook. As soon as i move the mouse/trackpad around, it'll wake back up, sometimes slower than others, but marginally.

recently though, i've had this problem where if i've left the computer on with the display asleep for longer than about 30min with everything else left running, the screen wont come back awake. it is not a brightness setting issue (because i leave it left at half at all times, and i also mess with it when it wont wake).

So when the screen wont wake back up, i cant do anything. I cant do force quit (maybe it pops up, but i cant see anything). I cant try to put the actual computer to sleep by folding it shut. the only option i am left with is to press and hold the power button, and turn it back on again.

It's been happening seemingly sporadically, but more frequently as time has passed. I've just recently done a permissions repair, and I am about to do a virus check. Meanwhile, i thought i'd ask the forum cause i'm new to apple, and i'm an idiot in general.

anyone?

thanks

I would suggest this:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449

But use the care that Apple expresses in this document and only do it if nothing else is cooperating.

I've noticed that when the password box comes up, you can't change the brightness of the display with the early versions of 10.3. If you do have to enter a password, wait a few seconds, then try entering it and pressing return. Since at least 10.3.2, I know I've been able to bring the brightness up 1 bar (it doesn't go any higher than that until you log in; kinda weird). I think I might have reported it to Apple, but I'm sure others have.

Hope this is helpful, if not, maybe it'll help someone else.

I'm having the exact same problem with my 12" RevB. I'll go to wake it up and it prompts me for a password. After entering in the password, the machine wakes up but the display stays asleep. Nothing I type or do (I too tried closing the lid and opening it again) will fix it. Fortunately, I have LaunchBar running, so I'm able to:

1. Bring up LaunchBar
2. Type in "Terminal" and hit Enter.
3. Type in "sudo reboot" and hit Enter.
4. Type in the sudo password.

All of that without even seeing what is going on! This will cause the machine to successfully reboot without me having to switch the power on and off, but it's definitely annoying. Is there an AppleScript command for waking up a display? Anyone else have this problem or any hypothetical solutions?

I am facing a similar problem. It happens just as soon as the display dims and has an occurrence of around 1 out of 100 times. It usually happens when I press a key on the keyboard after the display has dimmed to near-zero brightness.

I have not double-checked if it's just the LCD, or the whole mac has froze, though... It happened just twice so far, and one of them the mac wouldn't even go to sleep.

Seems like a power manager issue to me. We just need more information...

Hmm... well my particular issue appears to be have been resolved by disabling the password requirement on waking up from sleep. I think that after you enter in your password, it's the lock program itself that's screwing up and not properly returning me to a usable, viewable screen. This worked in my case, but obviously from the comments in this thread that differed from my own I don't think it'd work for everyone.
