CD labels obstructing the drive?

I am using CD labels from ( http://www.cdstomper.com/stsystem.phtml ). On numerous occasions, once the label has been applied to the CD and I insert it into my PowerBook, it sounds like it is rubbing inside the drive. Is that possible? The speed is reduced dramatically. It only occurs once the labels have been applied.

I realize the PowerBooks are extremely thin and compact, but is that normal? Has it happened to anyone else? Am I running the risk of my drive being damaged?

I remember reading, quite some time ago, I might add, an article in MacAddict that made a mention that labels applied to CDs can indeed interfere with them being played in a computer. (On the other hand, I think in th exact same issue there was a review for label-making software!)

It's one of the reasons I've never killed myself figuring out how to do this. I use a Sharpie. Very inelegant, but it works.

CD labels usually make the disc become slightly unbalanced so the drives drop their speed. Another factor that can make a disc spin slower or obstruct a slotloader is if the company which labels their media uses a thick painted labeling to cover up the true quality of the dye... add a label and those types of discs are extremely unbalanced which makes drives read them at 6-8x.

I've found Fuji, Sony and Maxell very good for applying labels without any noticable speed reductions. Avoid cheap CDRs like the HP stamped discs as they're horriblily slow once a label is stuck on them

i've noticed this problem too! when ripping cds onto my computer, it is often VERY loud when reading cds that i've applied cdstomper labels to. embarassingly loud. also, my drive sometimes seems to have problems reading the later parts of said cds. this is really annoying, as my drive will be ripping a song, then i'll hear the drive slow down and basically stop, then the computer is trying to read the cd but it's not working and all i hear is an occasional clicking sounds as the drive tries to read it. i usually have to force quit itunes as i t doesn't respond quickly at all when i tell it to cancel the ripping.
btw i'm on a tibook 400 (rev. a i suppose it would be)
has anyone else had this problem?
