Hi all,

I searched through the posts but couldn't find any clear information about this.

Can the new Aluminum 15" Powerbooks be started up with the 20" Apple Cinema Displays?

I want to buy the 20" ACD and tuck the Powerbook under the desk in closed lid mode. Just curious if I can Start Up, Sleep and Wake-Up using the control button on the Cinema Display.

*Apple docs just mention the Power Mac being able to do this, no mention of this with PBs.

**Saw a post that stated the Titanium could be controlled by the Cinema display, but not the new Aluminums, is this true?

Much thanks in advance for any advice.

I've not been able to work out a way to do this in a very similar situation (12" with a 20" Cinema display).

I've got used to plugging a sleeping PB into the screen and then waking it with the k/b. Works fine, though it does feel like a bit of a kludge. It is a Bluetooth keyboard I'm using, but I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

Thanks all2ofme, that's what I thought. Another poster had stated that the cinema system start up controls worked on his Titanium, but not his Aluminum. Strange and annoying. I'll post something to Apple about this, let you know if I find any other threads...

Btw, you're using the 12" RevB (1Ghz) right?

Thing is, I don't like to leave the computer on sleep at night (sounds strange to write it like that...) and there are times I envision where I need to do a solid shut down and then start up.... Darn, had hoped to stash my PB under the desk above the keyboard drawer, so I could easily put CDs in AND it would be exposed on the bottom side so it would be cooled easily. *SIGH*

Yeah, the 1GHz version. Works well, too. Once I got used to the idea of plugging it in while asleep it hasn't been too much of a problem. (Aside: I still think we should be calling it the rev.A [it is the first revision, after all!] but general usage seems to have taken over and misunderstandings would be rife if people changed now )

My 15"al works fine that way. I just hit the power button. Of course now that you mentioned it I'll have to go home and try it. I for the most part leave the PB closed. I also use the apple adc to dvi converter to drive the monitor. I'm not sure if there's a 3rd party product the converts adc to dvi.

Right about the revision numbering, never thought about it before.

Mike, so are you saying that have been able to startup with the Cinema display, or just wake from sleep? Let me know when you get the chance. Thanks you guys for all the help.

Hey, anyone know if Apple will release new displays this quarter?

I am able to start my Al 15" Powerbook with the Power button on the 20" Cinema Display. I don't need to put the powerbook to sleep but I am using the Apple adc -> dvi adapter if that makes any difference.

Thanks mittewil!!

Just to verify, with your Al15" Off and Lid Closed, you are able to start up using the Power Button on the 20" Cinema Display? MYohMY, if this is true, I'll have to go buy one (as soon as I have the cash..)!!

Btw, how do you like the setup? Does the powerbook get hot very much?

Vielendanke!!

I think any Powerbook that will connect with the DVI connector will work. (I'm kinda surprised that the 12" wouldn't power up, but maybe it has to do with the Mini DVI connector)

What's weird is that while I can boot up with the power button on the monitor, it only occasionally works when I hit it to bring up the shut down dialog box since upgradining to panther.

Just to verify I can start my Al15" from the 20" Cinema Display with the lid closed and the Powerbook off. The Powerbook does not get to hot with the lid closed at least as far as I can tell. I leave it on 24/7 and have not had any problems....well untill today the system was locked and I reset it the hard drive was not seen. Apple is sending the box so I'll be without it for a few days since they are going to replace the display because of the white spot issue and the hard drive. Other than this new issue I have loved this setup.

Thanks all of you!! I will be purchasing the cinema display soon thanks to all of your great advice!!

Though, seems strange, wonder if it is true that the 12" PB with the Mini-DVI Out does not have "connection" to start up via the Cinema display?? This would make some sense, as I always wondered how they were able to shrink the size of the connection down and not sacrafice quality/service... All2ofme, think this might be it??

Mittewil, sorry to hear about your PB problems, sheez, I'm more scared of getting those infamous white spots than getting cancer or AIDs (not making fun at all, actually serious!)

Mark, thanks for checking, these forums and people are wonderful!!

I feel quite the chump now. I just tried the above method of pressing the power button on the Cinema display while I had the 12" PB off and it worked perfectly.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhh

Hooray!
