I just realized that I missed the deadline for purchasing AppleCare for my 800MHz iBook. It's been problem free so far, but if it does die I'm majorly screwed.

How many of you guys have had an iBook fail after one year?

Two out of two in my experience.

My own iBook (Late 2001 model, 600MHz, DVD, 15GB hard drive) died after just two years had passed. The hard drive simply exploded. Now, a few months later, I've just bought a 20GB 5400rpm one to replace the dead 15GB 4200rpm one. It will arrive next Tuesday and hopefully I will be able to salvage the thing.

However, whilst it was problem-free for the first year, that second year had a whole bunch of problems, some of which included the screen getting increasingly dim and flickery (flickering between bright and dim), the battery completely died after 18 months, and the casing has come away from the bottom of the screen.

The second iBook, that of my girlfriend, is a November 2002 model (800MHz, DVD/CD-RW, 30GB hard drive). After just a few months of use the logic board died. Apple fixed it. It died a few months later. Apple fixed it. It died a few months later. And now, just after that first year expired, the logic board died again. Can you see a pattern here? Anyway, Apple have extended the warranty and have agreed to fix it. And, once they have, that bad boy is going straight on to eBay. She plans to buy a 12" PowerBook once new models are announced around March/April.

Anyway, I'm sure a whole bunch of people will tell you that their iBooks are running fine, and I'm sure that's the case for most people. But I ain't going to be buying one of those little disposable computers anytime soon.

iBook 700 Combo went in for repair twice for the logic board, both after the one year expired (without my knowledge, I had planned on purchasing it...missed the cut off by less than a week).

All glory to the hypnotoad.

I fixed the first iBooks (500 DVD) hinge problem by soldering an extra cable in there. My current machine (700 CD) once gave me weird output (looks similar to pictures I've seen from machines plagued by the logicboard failure). I reset the PRAM and it hasn't done it again. I think I'll still drop this baby to the repairs before the warranty is gone

I love iBooks, but two out of two have had problems...

EDIT:

Is there anyway of testing whether the logic board has gone bad? (the HW test CD?)

I would vote no 3 times if I could.
No problems with my 500, 700, and 800.
Although the fan suddenly kicked on fulltime last week on the 800, maybe it had something to do with the 90 day uptime. I restarted and it went away.
But my experiences have all been positive.

Hasn't failed yet, but it did fail twice within the first year. It had been packed away in anticipation of selling it in November, but the wife has now claimed it as her machine.

So we'll see how long it holds up.

Well, I just sold it on eBay. New, in-warranty iBook G4, here I come!

Thanks for your responses, by the way.
