I need to replace the HD in my iBook 500.I currently have a 10gb 4200 toshiba. It's dying. Is it OK to put in a travelstar 5400 drive or are they too hot and consume more battery? I only need to use this iBook for occasional use for internet and other general tasks. I assume another 4200 is most practical.

Hi Rono, I replaced my iBook 4200rpm with a travelstar 5400rpm too and there are no problems whatever with the new faster drive. I checked all the sites before on experiences on that topic ( www.xlr8yourmac.com is very useful with its drive database), and it seems as if the 5400 drive does not consume more power nor does it get considerably warmer than your old one. And you will notice the speed increase - at least I did (366mhz iBook)!

I replaced mine with an IBM Travelstar too; also note that the IBM Travelstar drives have an 8MB cache rather than the normal 2MB that other drives offer. My iBook certainly flies now!

i bought a ibook 300MHZ with an upgraded HD of 20gb and it is a 5400rpm drive, and the ibook is faster than my stock 700mhz ibook (4200rpm drive) was with the same amount of ram (128mb) if i ever get another laptop, i WILL definitely upgrade the HD to a faster one, the speed is amazing
