May I refer you to this thread. They talk about Voodoo PC's A64 notebook.

No, the Athlon consumes much more power than the G5, in paper at least. I remember reading somewhere (no link right now, sorry), that the mobile Athlons need more than 80 Watts, while a G5 at 1.8 GHz and 130 nm consumes only 47 Watts. At 90 nm this would even lower. See the thread KraziKid pointed to.
So, I don't know how they manage to put this processor in laptops. Perhaps they don't care if the users burn something... sensible .

There have be 64-bit laptops for years.
As for the A64 - it's the ultimate thigh burner in a laptop. If I went Windows, I'd MUCH prefer a Pentium M.

Yes, here is it! So, indeed this processor consumes around 81.5 W and this can go up to 85 W. Its only difference from the desktop version is a metallic cover on the die.

Just saw one of these emachine 64 bit 15" laptops at the BestBuy store here in NYC.
The price is nearly HALF of the 32 bit 17" Powerbook.
No DVD burner..but it did have a firewire port!
I wasn't expecting to be so let down to see another company beat Apple to the punch on this.
But..at least other companies aren't afraid of innovation.

It's not difficult to build a desktop into a laptop if you're willing to sacrifice certain things. This particular beast weighs 7.5lbs. I'm certain Apple could make a 15" 7.5lbs PB G5, but I wouldn't want one.
Emachines isn't really competing with Apple, but rather just trying to capture a piece of the PC laptop market. They had to make compromises to put that A64 in it.

I've been reading in the various PC magazines that emachines are much nicer today compared to previous models.
I'm very tempted to try out one of these 64 bit emachines..(laptop)..does anyone have one (either desktop or laptop)..thoughts on it?

I've gotta give props to eMachines here ... I got a cheapo desktop model (500Mhz Celeron) back in 2000, and amazingly it has given me no trouble (beyond some common Windows 98 annoyances) in almost 4 years. When I got it, I did do a clean install of Win98 to get rid of all their crappy proprietary software, though.
I don't know if I've been uncommonly lucky or what, but it certainly has surpassed my expectations!

eMachines are actually pretty good, I used one as my primary computer for over a year, and they're especially nice if you compare them to other PC makers. Can't beat the prices when comparing them to Dells or Gateways.
