I have a stock 15' 1,25Ghz aluminium Powerbook and have been using it for around 15 days. It came preinstalled with Panther 10,3. I was getting regular freezes of the system, every three to four hours. I wouldnt get any error message, the screen would just freeze up, i could still used the mouse but the clock wouldnt update anymore, and nothing else worked. I had only one option, to reboot. I decided to update my system to the latest, 10.3.2 hoping that the preinstalled one had issues and that would resolve it. Well, it freezes less often, but i got two in about three days, and one just a few minutes ago.

Is there a log file somewhere that i can check to see what exactly happened ? Has this happened to anyone else and did they find out what caused it ? Is this a hardware problem ?

I use Safari, mail, a p2p app and itunes mostly, all the latest versions. I use Apple Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, and external LaCie firewire 800 drive.

Thanks for your help, i love this machine, but this is my third one (the two previous had screen and keyboard defects). This is is cosmetically perfect, so id hate to switch it for a new one.

Cheers

Just be sure you have everything backed up!

Log files are frequently cryptic and indecipherable. Here's some suggestions: Disconnect the fw-800 drive and run without it (do the crashes go away? have you updated to the latest firmware on the fw drive?) Next, if the crashes persist, do an archive and install (do the crashes go away?)

Do you have any 3rd party haxies installed? Uninstall them (do the crashes go away?)

If the crashes persist after an archive and install, backup everything and reformat the drive. Yes, you'll have to reinstall everything, making sure you use the same user name and password, but there are numerous reports of Apple's default installation being sometimes damaged.

thanks for your replies, i will try running without the Firewire drive and see how that goes. If it continues to freeze, ill format and reinstall. If that fails, i will call Applecare and see what they have to say.

Cheers
