Apple Care is a must IMO...especially for a Powerbook. It covers your @ss, just in case something happens. It's only $350, and most major repairs will cost more than that. You can purchase, and activate it...anytime within one year of the purchase date of the computer.

You can purchase AppleCare anytime within the 1 year original warranty. HOWEVER, no matter when you buy it, it still covers 3 years from the date of purchase of the computer.
AppleCare is DEFINATELY worth the investment. I know I have gotten my worth from it, and several others as well. It doesn't cover accidental damage or theft though, so you might want to look into getting a lock or separate insurance. Personally, I have AppleCare and I have a Personal Articles Insurance Policy from State Farm. It was only $30 a year or so.
Anyway, if you're planning on keeping your Apple for more than one year, buy AppleCare, now or later, it doesn't matter. The only thing you miss out on if you do it later is that you will not have full access to phone support. But, if that need arises, the representative on the phone will offer you the choice of paying $50 per support incident (incidents may be more than one call), or purchasing AppleCare.
Hope this helps.

I agree with the above...plus AppleCare is only $249 with the educational discount.
Also, definitely look into other insurance coverage (I'm going to look into the Personal Articles coverage that chipchen was talking about). I took a spill on my bicycle a few weeks ago and my 2-month-old 17" AlBook cushioned my fall. Luckily my renter's insurance is covering the repair (minus the $250 deductible), but it was questionable for a little while whether they were going to cover it or not. Safeware also sells laptop insurance; kind of expensive but less so than a new PowerBook. Better safe than sorry!

Turn off your caps lock key!!!!!!
Then do a search on this forum for AppleCare. Your question has been discussed in great detail many times.
