So i just got my 12" 1ghz today, and I am trying to connect it to the internet. I pulled the ethernet cable from my home computer and plugged it into my new laptop. (I am using a cable modem, BTW) It is directly connected to the cable modem. Well, it just isn't working, it says that it cannot automatically connect to the ISP. But when I plug it back into my home computer and do the steps I did on my laptop, it works fine! What is going on? Can I not just plug it in and get online??

Any help will be much appreciated!!

Thanks
Bateman

Some cable modem providers register the MAC address of the device connected to their cable modem.

Disconnect your PC from the cable modem, connect your 12" PB to the cable modem as you did before.

Then power off the cable modem and PB. Leave them sit for 30 minutes if you can. Then go back and turn both on again. By that time, the cable ISP should have automatically cleared the MAC registration of your PC and will register the MAC address of your Powerbook.

This is one possible cause, of course. You might have to check your PB settings as well. But most Apple's are DHCP by default.

I recommend that you get a Linksys firewall and use that between your cable modem and your computers.

Much simpler and another layer of protection. Then you can use both your Apple PB and your PC.
