I have been sitting on the sidelines waiting for some new Mac desktops to arrive. And while they may be announced tomorrow, I just could not wait any longer.
I could not make up my mind though between the iBook and the various PowerBook models.
I finally settled on the PB 12" w/Superdrive.
No problems so far (terrified after reading these forums!) with screen or heat.
Heat was an issue for me. The left palm rest has been NUCLEAR hot on most 12 inchers that I have played with at stores in the past.
But I am running 10.3.2 and had it running last night for 6 straight hours. It got warm but not hot, and I am fussy about that kind of thing.
In the end, I went with the PB 12 w/Superdrive because I want the DVD burning (to fully use the entire iLife 2004 suite) and the line-in (for garageband)
Speaking of which, Garageband not playing was a concern too. Reading lots of "hard drive too slow" error messages from all but the fastest dual G5's. I was able to play all the G3 songs but some of the track-heavy G4-G5 song demos did give me that message.
However, I have only 256 megs (stock) at the moment too. Getting a 512 meg stick today to bring me to 768 megs later today. I will attempt to play them again to see the improvement.
I thought the smaller screen would bother me but Expose makes the smaller real estate easier to manage and I can always use my larger NEC MultiSync if necessary externally.
But I actually like the smaller size! More compact, easier to move around and so light.
Wow. 12" PB heaven!

I hate to tell you this but your 12"PB came with two 128MB memory modules. So when you buy a 512MB, you will have to remove a 128MB to install thus giving you 640MB of ram.

May God Be With You.

not true. the powerbook g4 ( 1 Ghz) comes with stock 256MB (non-removable) with one "empty" slot available for upgrades. so the additional 512 MB shld bump up the mem to 768MB
<<edit>> Tek beat me to it ...

Thanks Tek and Matt! My bad. I should have made sure I was correct. I think I mistakenly looked at the iBook specs. This is good news as my 12" is arriving on Tuesday and I thought was was stuck at 640MB.

Stuck at 640?
Incorrect again.
You can get the PB 12" up to 1.25 gig of RAM by adding a 1024 meg module ($340 at Crucial.com), if you really wanted to.
But the price break point is on the 512 meg module. I just bought one at CompUSA today for $140. $110 mail order, but I want it NOW.
I forgot how tiny those damn PB screws are though. I am searching my house for something that will turn them.

Hey Switched,
Congrats on your new PB. I just paid $80.00 for 512MB at a store here named Fry's. I would never spend 349.00 for 1GB of ram. 768MB is more then I need since the 12" is a graduation present for my cousin.

Just got back from the store with my CompU$A Centon brand-name memory.
Finding a Phillips 00 screwdriver is the hardest part of this.
Fortunately the Stanley #0 flat tip work well in the cross-tip screws if you work it gently.
I installed the memory and am now at 768 megs. Booted up fine.
Going to do the Garageband test again with the additional memory to see how much of a difference that makes.
Laptop battery (first calibration charge) is down to a mere 7 %. Gotta go and wait the pending standby and shutdown.
Will post the results later tonight.
