I have a 12" Powerbook rev A with 128mb stick in the memory expansion bay. When I put the cover on it doesn't recognize it. Without the cover it works fine. I tried another stick of ram and the same thing happens. I noticed that the cover does touch the ram and screwing the cover on pushes down the ram alittle. Right now I have the cover taped on lightly where it doesn't effect the ram, but it looks ugly. The ram bay itself looks fine, although the locking tabs for the ram are are all metal and I noticed on 15" Powerbooks the locking tabs have plastic on them. Maybe its just different on the 12". I did buy this used, knowing that it didn't work, but at least I got it to work even though it looks ugly. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Are you sure you are pushing the RAM all the way into the slot so that it snaps under the arms on either side? There should be no reason the cover touches the RAM. Also, make sure you are not using double height SO-DIMMs (memory chip stacked on top of another chip, though I wouldn't think this would be the case for a 128 MB DIMM). They are not compatible and won't fit. If you are still having problems, take your machine to an Apple store. Perhaps your Powerbook was not assembled correctly, with the logic board somehow too close to the bottom case.

Thanks Steve for the reply. Yes, I have the ram pushed in far enough so the clips snap into place. But when the cover is put on I guess it pushes down the backend end of the ram enough so it stop making contact inside the rambay. The ram is PC2100s 128MB DDR 266MHz.

It should not do that unless you are using an out of spec SO-DIMM or the motherboard is not seated correctly. Any chance you can take a picture and post it? I've never heard of a problem like this, and I've taken a number of these machines apart.

I'll try to take some pics and post them. Right now I have the ram in there with the cover tape on lightly and everything is working fine. I'm going to spring for a 512mb within the next couple days. I was told when I bought this it wouldn't take any ram so I guess right now I'm ahead of the game. Thanks for your help Steve, I'll keep you posted.
