I am the proud owner of a 15" superdrive (first mac-LOVE the machine/OS!!!)... with one pixel with the red channel stuck in the center of the screen(fortunately only one!) I can massage the pixel and get it to function for a while, but then it comes back.

Will it get better over time or should I just give up?

Also, The sleep light is very cool, but is kind of a pain when you are trying to sleep as well! Is there any way to modify its behavior to be either less bright/ off entirely?

Thanks!

firstly, welcome to the wonderful world of apple and macOS.

consider yourself lucky that you can massage the dead pixel to go away. even if only for a short time. i would massage it as soon as i noticed it was back, in hope that it would finally correct itself.

the sleep light issue, there was a post recently, with someone asking the same question. which i can not seem to find right now. but the general consensus was to just cover the light with a cloth, or something, while you sleep.

I have looked around and the consensus seems to be that there is nothing that can be done about the sleep light. I have to disagree with what has been said for a couple of reasons. There have been reports of the sleep light ceasing to function and the an upgrade to panther and or PMU reset has corrected the problem. This suggests to me that the light is controllable through either software or firmware. Has anyone played around with hacking the PMU? I might try to look at open darwin and see if I can find anything, but I admit that I am a bit of a newbie to all of that! But I don't think that it is impossible to modify the sleep light, just takes some effort!

For those interested, the stuck pixel has gone away after repeated massages.

Physman, I second it in welcoming you to the "Macworld". Once you take time and experience what the MacOS will do for you, you will develop a deep passion for it and contiunue buying more in the future.
So first off, congrats on getting rid of that nasty pixel as they can really be a pain. As for the sleep light I don't really understand why it's such a problem for you since it's a notebook and not a desktop. Why not simply turn the Powerbook to it's backside if you insist on allowing it to sleep? The only real way to do away with the sleep light is to shut the Mac down when you are finished with it.

It's not a big deal to shut down the computer. Windows users do it every day. But for convenience it's defintely easier to just close the lid and let it sleep since you can wake it back up for use right away as most of us do which brings me back to my question as to why not just turn the Powerbook to it's backside before "you" go to sleep? No pun intended.
The sleep light is unique to all Macs, IMHO it's rather flattering and cool to look at. The pulsing lamp is designed to simulate a human sleeping while breathing in and out.
Anyway have fun with it.

I have the same issue with the sleep lights on my G5 and 20" cinema display -- they are SO BRIGHT, more like sleep BEACONs when you are trying to sleep. As a result, every night I prop a CD or DVD case over my display. Oh well.

But. This should definitely be firmware-controllable. Unfortunately I have see no hacks around that disable it. Send apple feedback and maybe we'll get a hidden option in the next release... I think that's the best bet..

cheers..
