It's a major problem. I saw this once on a PB and it was caused by a problem in the hinge where the fires from the GPU go to the screen. I suggest your roomie get on the phone to Apple PDQ.

Thanks, that was my guess. I figured I would ask, you never know.

I had the same problems with my machine. If I tap on the screen the screen will be clear again. I sent it to AppleCare for repair and now all is fine again. They listed they replaced "P84 LCD CABLE"

The artifact on my screen was most notiicble during startup or waking from sleep. Waiting a few minutes usually clear this up.

Yup, time to call Apple Care for your friend there.

Was similar and actually worse right out of the box, it had to go back to apple for a video cable and a usb cable to be replaced, came back in a few days just like new.
