Hi,

I have a fairly new iBook G4 933Mhz. I got it in December just before Christmas. I have never really noticed any noise coming from it except for hard-drive activity, etc.

Today, I installed the "spanning hack" since everyone seems to say it works out fine. After I installed it, I noticed a quiet noise coming from the lower-left corner (I guess where the hard-drive is). It sounds like fan noise. Anyways, I decided to get rid of the spanning hack by resetting the OpenFirmware stuff as described on the spanning hack website. Its all gone now, but I still hear the noise.

The noise is quite quiet. I can't hear it over music, and can't really hear it too much unless I put my ear close to that corner. So, I am thinking that I may be paranoid - that is, because I was expecting something to go wrong with the spanning hack, I am finding it. But you never know ...

So, could someone please let me know if I should be hearing this noise all the time or not?

Thanks!

there is a fan in there and you are probably just hearing that...if I remember right the HD is in the center of the case so it probably isn't that (I will be taking my portable certs next month so I will be able to strip these babies down!) but I would not be concerened...if the noise starts to get loud and stays loud then I would call into tech support

If the faint noise is there from startup (cold condition of the iBook), then it's probably not the fan, which is only supposed to kick in when the going gets tough and the processor heats up for difficult tasks.

Maybe you're just overly sensitive now after that daring hack of yours, as you proposed yourself.

I don't know about the new white iBooks, but in my clamshell one the hardrive IS in the lower left corner, and putting my ear to the shell, I can make out its slight running noise.

For reference: The hard drive is directly under the left palm rest. The processor and its fan are located by the screen hinge (where the vents are).
