an article about this problem was just posted on the main macnn page. this is a pretty big issue, not just a minor annoyance. many powerbook/ibook owners do not shut down or reboot their machines, its actually probably better that they don't unless absolutely necessary for installs/long trips/etc.

basically, the usb2.0 ports on the new aluminum powerbooks and g4 ibooks cease to function or mount devices after the machine wakes up from sleep, requiring a reboot to work again. has anybody contacted/gotten a response from apple about this issue? it seems like something a firmware upgrade could solve, rather than having huge masses of people sending their machinees in through applecare.

there should be some major public bitching about this, since that is what convinced apple that they need to do something to fix the uneven illumination / ibook hardware problems.

i just received my rev b 17 in. powerbook, but unfortunately i can't test this usb2 issue because i don't have any usb2 devices yet, and i am sending it in today for apple to repair the dark/bright patches on the screen (rare for the 17 in. apparently, but it is indeed there). hopefully they replace the screen, because there is also a stuck red pixel on it.

I haven't noticed this at all with my iBook G4 12", but i dont have any usb2.0 drives either.

Lemme go try and see whats up.
OK, plugged in USB 2.0 Drive with comp on
Mounted drive
closed iBook with drive mounted
waited 'till sleep LED blinked
opened iBook back up, drive was still there, and functioned normally
Ejected drive, unplugged USB cable from drive
plugged cable back in, drive mounted.

Looks like it works fine to me

thats good to hear (er, read). this should definitely be narrowed down, to see if its only specific devices or os versions or whatever. it is obviously better if there's no problem, or one that is easily resolved or perhaps not even apple's fault to begin with. i certainly don't want to fuel a witch hunt here.

perhaps its more of a powerbook problem (?)

Well, according to the article mentioned above, it's only some powerbooks/ibooks and the reader who noted the problem was able to reproduce it under OS X 10.2.x, currently investigating 10.3. Assuming this problem is more widespread, shouldn't it have drawn more attention by now when it began to occur under 10.2.x ?? 10.2 has been available some time now and new powerbooks/iBooks G4 as well...

It has been noted before, there are references to it in Apples Forums. My 2 month old rev b AL 12" has the problem, I notice it when using my Sony Micro Vault flash drive. I am using 10.3.2.

New G4 iBook user here, and I'm having same problem as described.

Plugged in a USB 2.0 Sandisk 8 and 1 card reader after I woke up the iBook. Would not mount no matter what I did... I plugged and unplugged the reader, tried both ports, nothing. Finally I just shut down and rebooted, that did the trick.

Very annoying

I have the problem on my iBook G4. It makes using my new external USB 2.0 hard drive a nearly ridiculous exercise. I hope that it is a driver issue only and that it is resolved quickly. There is speculation that the problem is in the hardware. If so, this little lappy is going far away from me.

I see a lot of people reporting this problem in the context of USB storage devices. I don't have any of those, so could someone clarify: Is it just storage devices or all USB devices? Is it just USB2.0 devices or all devices of all versions?

I had a USB hub with 2 USB 1.1 devices and 1 USB 2 Scanner plugged into it. The problem seems to afflict just USB 2 devices intermittantly.

My Usb-memory, a kingston DataTraveler 2.0 as mentioned above wont mount after sleep. but all my USB 1.0 devices works fine.... Because the memory is USB 1.0 compatible (and 2.0) i thougt it should atomaticlly switch to usb 1.0 mode. but it simply don't mount.

None of the lights indicating 1.0 or 2.0 are glowing.

Just posted a new article about this in the Peripherals section. I couldn't do a search for similar threads, MacNN server issues.
I have the same problem with an iBook G4 and Acomdata USB 2.0 / FW drive.
Problem doesn't exist with my Epson printer on the other USB port.

Just thought I'd share...
