Was the amount of rumors and questions about upcoming G4 powerbooks (When they first came out the the G4 tower) as bad as questions about when G5 powerbooks will be available?

Short answer: Yes.

Mostly because there was so much hype around AltiVec and the Super Computer label that Apple stuck on the Power Mac G4 for marketing.

Not quite as bad this time around with the G5, but still quite bad.
