I have had a Powerbook 12" (with an Airport Extreem card) and a G4 desktop (with an Airport card) running in my apartment for 6 months now. They are connecting to a linksys base station (802.11b). All of the sudden, just the other day my laptop will no longer connect. The airport menu icon says Authenticating, when trying to connect (it never used to say this), but then never gets an IP, and the internet doesn't work. Things still work fine on my G4 desktop. The oddest thing is that nothing has changed, this just all of the sudden started happening. I just updated my desktop and the laptop to the latest airport drivers, but still no go.

Anyone with some insight and help on the matter would be much appriciated.

Before you start changing anything, be sure to first power everything including the linksys off and back on. You've probably already done that, but just in case you haven't...

If that doesn't work, and you've tried romeosc's suggestion, look in the linksys' web config for an error log or a current status of connected clients. Some routers will show you the mac addresses of wireless clients that have attempted or made connections. It's possible the linksys has erronously filtered the mac for your powerbook.

Just try to cover a few of the more simple things before making config changes. Sometimes that can save a lot of extra work.

We have an open access point, so no password. Maybe I will try setting a password, and seeing if maybe that changes things.

And yes I am seeing a signal, just am not getting an IP from the access point. There is some message in the Network system preferences that I am connected to the access point but am not getting an IP from the router.

Yep, tried that

I also just tried updating the linksys firmware to the latest release, and it hasn't changed anything.

I will check that out.

What is odd is the "Authenticating" message that scrolls in the menu bar when I select the access point. I have never seen this happen before, when connecting to any access point. And after a minute or so it goes away, leaving me with the appearence all is ok, but I am getting no IP.

And I am sure other things are ok, as I can connect to other access points (for example ones on my campus) with my laptop. And I know the linksys is ok, as my desktop can connect to it just fine.

Someone in your apartment building may have acquired a cordless phone transmitting on 2.4ghz. We had the same trouble until we upgraded to 5.8ghz. Also check the preamble on the router. if it is short change it to long. That worked for my D-Link router.
