i just got a 12 inch iBook on Jan 24th at the apple store on Roosevelt Feild in garden city NY, and problems started the same night.

i had them install a airport card for me as i dont feel comfortable doing this myself (ill take apart a pc but not a iBook.) and the first machine they got for me had a scratch on the lcd or something, i dont know exactly the guy at the store was vague.. i didnt care though, i was coming home with my first mac!!

so i get it home, plug it in for a few hours and start playing, OMG i have a mac!! w00w00!! and then i descide let me drain the battery to do the calibrations, by this time it was almost 3am.. i couldnt stay awake any longer so i close the lid and it goes to sleep, wake up the next morning, drain the rest of the battery.. ok the calibration is done. w00w00. go to charge it.. wtf, the glowing ring is green?! call applecare they recomend i take it back to the store and talk to someone at the genius bar. go to the apple store, and the man behind the counter is very nice (i have to say everyone at the apple store here is very nice... i dont think im in kansas anymore o.O) takes a look at the machine, tries a diffrent AC adapter, still green... puts my ac adapter on a 17 inch powerbook that they toss around, (MUST HAVE! ) its amber, so he says i can exchange the iBook for a new one, ok so i did that. He tested everything for me, i didnt really want to come back as it makes me want my iPod even more and i cant afford it. so i get home and no iLife 04.. no biggie i dont need garageband (i cant play a instrument to save my life) and iMovie (dont have a camcorder) call the store, the guy accidently forgot to put it back in the box but he was holding it for me, mistakes happen i wasnt going to hold it against him or apple, i still had a iBook!

i noticed the battery doesnt sit flush with the case, and theres a creek in the left palm rest. I called applecare again, they started a case for me for both issues and the guy on the phone had never heard of these problems and said i can send it in to get fixed, but itd take 3-5 days. I dont want to send it back now as its like parting with a child, this is my baby. (ok i know i have issues.) so he said he would keep the case open and if i wanted to i could call them back and they would send me a box to mail it back in.

now im thinking since this is my 3rd iBook with a problem within a week, that my local mac store recived a bad batch of them. is this a common problem or do i just have bad luck, or am i just being picky.. i mean i did pay 1,300+ for the iBook it better work and look right.

ok that ends my rant, sorry for the long post. =|

I think just about everybody's G4 iBook creaks above the left palmrest. And my battery isn't flush either. -shrug- If I was you I wouldn't bother sending it to Apple Care.

Congratulations on your new iBook!! Here's to many hours of wirelessly surfing Macnn.

Sorry to hear about the initial troubles you've been having. I guess there's always one in every batch.

The battery of my iBook G4/12" isn't fully flush, either, but since I don't look at it much from that angle, it doesn't bother me. I doubt that it really can be flush with the rest unless there were something that held it in place. It seems that only the lock is keeping it where it is.

As for the left palm rest, yes, it does creak a little. Since I don't rest my wrists much (as I find that area a tad too warm for prolonged rest periods), it doesn't creak as much compared to other owner's iBook G4s, who I pressume rest their wrists often. For that, I guess I'd recommend getting a wrist rest protector. It'll also prevent discoloration, too.

Hmm, i know the feeling... this is my third iBook G4 12". had two with defect screens before. And 'cause i live in Sweden it took about two and a half month to get tis one (which's not faulty). the ones before had a sloppy fitting battery and that creeky sound but this one was good...

for two and a half month I hated apple... but now i'm starting to forgive them

when i was on the phone with applecare the guy i was talking to had said the battery should fit flush with the case.

and on the forums on the apple site some people said that they sent the machine to applecare and the creeking was resolved.

in the long run these cosmetic issues arent a big deal for me and i'm not going to send it to applecare.

the creek when using the palmrest and lack of flush body panels is normal with the ibook. It's meant to be tossed around, so I guess they figure they wont try to make it as perfect as a PB.
