I have always been a PC user. Currently I use a Dell Inspiron 5150 (3GHz, 512DDR, etc etc..) which is OK, but I have been advised on more thqan one occasion that a Powerbook might be better for me.
Never having used one, I don't know what exactly the differences are.
Obviously the price is quite alot more, but what exactly am i getting for double the money I paid for my PC laptop.
I use my computer for audio and video manipulation, processing and sequencing.

Well, I'm sure that you can do a spec-to-spec comparison to find out exactly what the differences are between the machines. Things to watch out for are "integrated graphics" and lack of such things as Firewire and "real" wireless on Wintel machines.

Beyond hardware differences, I'd say the biggest selling point for me would be OS X. This is one powerful and fun to use OS. Having Final Cut and other AV apps for X seems like it makes this a good option for you.

I use a 1Ghz TiBook with 1 Gig of RAM. This machine is quite fast and I am rarely waiting on the processor. In fact, the principal bottle-neck is not the processor at all, but the hard disk. This is the main speed limiting aspect on all portables, apple or otherwise, so don't focus on clock speed.

Apples in general were built for Audio and Video manipulation. Powerbooks are like having a portable studio with you. They have the processing power of a desktop, the portablility to be taken anywhere with you for presentations, and they run on an OS that is one of the most stable I've ever had the pleasure of using.

As a person that uses my Powerbook for image manipulation, I can say that they are certainly worth it.

Short answer: yes, it's what you need
http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...hreadid=200899

Long answer: it's perfect for your uses, and I'd consider the following three factors in choosing a laptop:

1. The "number specs." Mhz, MB, the obvious stuff. The stuff that gets big print in ads, and everybody knows to look at.

2. More importantly, the OTHER specs--features that one laptop has that another lacks. PowerBooks offer a lot of easily-overlooked things, like TV-out with spanning, DVI, gigabit ethernet, FireWire 800, three kinds of wireless, backlit keys, slot-load optical drive, a great charger with pop-out prongs, and simply cramming a lot into a very thin and portable package!

3. FAR AND AWAY MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL IS THE OPERATING SYSTEM. Panther vs. Windows is night and day. The OS, not the tech specs, are what you use and deal with day to day, moment to moment. Using Panther for a few days is what will tell you the most.

And you can keep your Windows box around for those apps you aren't ready to replace yet. I also find Virtual PC very convenient (but slow). So convenient that I never turn on my Windows box anymore.

Actually... I haven't run Windows in months even on VPC...
