Whow ! Thats' strange...
It happened today for the third time : when inserting a cdr in my Powerbook G' (800, running 10.3.2) my screen goes black, even though I can still see some of the desktop items, just like if the dim was set at the lowest...
it's fixed by a restart or closing the lid...

Anyone got this ?

Ok, seems that it has nothing to do with CDs...
It just happens randomly...

The screen sets itself like if the backlight level was at it's minimum state and stays taht way.

Only way to fix it is to go to sleep or by restarting.
I wonder if I should reinstall everything or if it is hardware related...

Anyone with this ?

When things go bad typically you try the usuals

Fix permissions
Reset PMU
Zap PRAM

......

If you are still under warranty I would be calling Apple. I read too many forums and have not heard of anything like this before.

Not being an expert (as many will agree) it sounds like your computer is dimming the screen to save energy but not remembering to wake up again. Look in system prefs in your energy saver to see if this sheds some light on it.

I tried all this a few weeks ago... didn't change anything.
I even trashed all the prefs files related with energy savings, even in the /Library/ and /System/ folders

Happenned again yesterday..
Guess I'l call Apple, but it was just to be sure it was not a known issue

I follow way too many fori and this is something I have never heard of before.

My guess is that unless something is popping up in your console that highlights the problem, Apple will ask for a reinstall of the OS.

In the console I get a PMU message :

ApplePMUUserClient::setProperties WakeOnACchange 0

Just like if I switched AC/Battery

Strange

There is a discussion here but it does not have anything that you have not tried already - though knowing that your problem out there may be a small consolation.

I also had a look on the Apple boards and this seems to be becoming more common though unfortunately none of them had a definitive answer. The best seemed to go into enery saver and make it so your computer never and HD never sleeps, though this to me is not a long term solustion....

Here is a theory I have...

Most of the time this happens for me, I am using my Ti without the battery, just the power cord and, at the same time, I am using iSight, iPod and a firewire powered drive (LaCie Pocket Drive) and some time burning a CD.

Could all of this create a sort of drain that would cause the mac to dim the screen ?
