Hello there ...

So I have been given a new 15" Apple PowerBook computer and I am wondering how I use it when I travel.

At home, it will be using DHCP to connect to my DSL line ... but how do I use it in a hotel or at StarBucks (for example) ... if it is set up for DHCP will it just work?

Sorry if this question is stupid ... but I have never had a laptop with wireless networking capability or otherwise

Thanks

Gordon

In my experience, it should detect whatever network it is hooked into if you have it set to DHCP.

Yeah I agree with the above, and incase it doesn't try restarting your computer and it should be ok, atleast thats how it works with me.

I set my Powerbook to automatic in the Apple menu and then locations. The computer than finds theright type of protocol and will ask you to fill in things when necessary.

By the way this is also a great way to use wireless networks where they'are not'. Many small companies have a non secured wireless network and then I can surf for free over their lines. Okay it is difficult sending out mails via pop ut at least i can check mails, surf for free at very high speed and send e-mails via webmail

That's why a free Yahoo mail account is good for sending email on road! Just limits size of attachments etc.

the DHCP will work perfectly fine.

as soon as you leave one wireless spot your ip address will go away, when you go to a new one it will automatically give you a new ip address.

this will work whether you are using wirless or a network cable
