I'm not sure this topic has been covered from a comparison perspective, but I thought I'd share my experience between my two TiBook and AlBook.
I decided to get the AlBook because I wanted USB 2.0, Airport Extreme, the Radeon graphics card, and durability of the new AlBook design. I was on the fence and at one point decided to wait until the G5 PowerBooks eventually come out.
After spending about 20 minutes tinkering with the AlBook at the Apple Store I decided to buy it.
So far I love this machine! The performance difference between my TiBook and AlBook isn't substantial (maybe 15% -- It is definitely “snappier”), but the productivity gains are considerable. For instance, I was working on a project last night and had to move a few 1gig folders from my G5 to my AlBook over the wireless network. It took 1/10th the amount of time it would take with the TiBook! Those are real gains!
Also, I have a MPIO 1.5gig micro-drive (similar to a flash drive) that I put files on from an office PC. This drive was filled to capacity and usually takes about 20-25 minutes for me to move all the data to my TiBook over the USB 1.1 slots. Using my AlBook it took 3 minutes! Unbelievable!
The AlBook is about 15-20 seconds faster booting up than the TiBook even thought the AlBook has 512mgs of RAM compared the the TiBooks 1gig of RAM.
I notice that I do not have as many typos with the new keyboard and generally speaking my typing is as fast as the standalone USB keyboards I plug into my TiBook.
When using my MPIO 1.5 drive with my TiBook, I couldn't have any other usb device connected at the same time since the MPIO micro-drive would block the other port slightly. With the AlBook, there is one port on each side of the laptop. I initially didn't like the side ports, but I now see their benefits.
Unreal Tournament 2003 is averaging 74fps at 1280x854 with max settings. My TiBook got about 51 fps.
I will still be getting a PowerBook G5 when it is released, but until then, this is the greatest PowerBook ever DESIGNED. The TiBook 1ghz has my vote for the best PowerBook from a manufacturing standpoint.
BTW - So far I've had no quality issues with my AlBook. I got AppleCare just in case though.
