The powerbook (with panther) recognizes clicks from the mouse, but the mouse cannot move the cursor.
Is there some obvious setting I'm missing?

BTW, the mouse is an MS Intellipoint Optical Mouse.

i think you spotted the issue;
its not on glass; it on a leather/vinyl deskcover;
but i now think there is something wrong with the mouse's optical detection; i drag my fingers in front of it, and the cursor moves.
