Is it safe to travel with a pb in sleep mode? Is the hard drive locked down? Or do I run the risk of damaging the hard drive?

It would be very cool if I could just close the lid, put my 17" pb in it's bag and roll.

Any ideas?

Worry not.

Sleeping was practically invented for notebook users on the go. Traveling with the machine asleep in your bag is perfectly fine. I used to do it all the time when I was a notebook man.

Yes, sleep works perfectly while traveling. I always put my PowerBook to sleep when I'm traveling and it has survived everything fine: Planes, trains, busses, cars, carrying, banging against other people, getting swung onto tables, etc.

Not a hitch.

A guy at our lab actually threw his 17" PowerBook from his desk onto the concrete floor (by accident of course) while it was sleeping. The PowerBook got a big dent and cracked, but when he opened the lid it came right back to life and worked fine.

We hooked it up to an external FW disk, backed up everything and ordered a replacement. While he was waiting for the replacement he used the PowerBook for another three days and everything went just fine.

Sleep rules.

I take my Powerbook out for travel all the time in sleep mode. That's what it's made for, traveling with your laptop while not having to turn it off. Don't worry about it.
