I've got this 600 MHz late 2001 model that began behaving in a strange way the other day. When I open the iBook as far as it goes the Airport signal strength drops out entirely and as I inch it forward the signal increases little by little until I reach about 90 deg. then it becomes full strength.

I thought this might be the Airport cable that runs from the Aorport card to the antenna around the screen. So I open the iBook up and take a look at the wire. I can't see anything wrong with it. I try to push and jab it but it appears solidly stuck with no visible damage. Frustrated I reassemble the machine and start it up. No difference - but then I didn't do much.

Has anyone had this problem? Is there anything that can be done to fix this?

Thanks, voodoo

How certain are you that the airport card is functioning properly? I would place it in another Mac and see whether it works fine in it.

Roger that. I'll swap it with the Airport card from my brother's eMac. Thanks for the tip.

Same problem here with my iBook 500, and my brother's 700. It's definitely a fault in the iBook design... I think the cables get damaged in the hinge... I have also some problems with video backlight depending on the position of the screen. (the video cable gets damaged too)
