I thought I remembered seeing that someone put out an alternative to Spanning Doctor that installed without going into the terminal. Was I dreaming? Anyone know?

Try this link to get the information on the patch and/or the small patch application (much easier to use than the Open Firmware version), ScreenSpanningDoctor.sit.

It works very well on my iBook G4 933.
Good Luck, there does seem to be a slight performance hit according to the results from Xbench pre- and post-patch, about 4-6% I think.

I have been using this on my iBook G4 12 inch for 3 months, and it's great! When you go into monitor preferences it can detect the type of monitor you have.
Very nice.

Thanks, all, for the info. I guess that I had thought that someone had modified the ScreenSpanningDoctor.sit version so that you didn't have to go into the terminal to do it--just click install. I did try google but didn't come up with anything so I thought maybe someone might remember.

The Screen Spanning Doctor doesn't use the Terminal.
