15" 667mhz powerbook 512mb ram 2.5 years in age.

Ever since I installed Panther (may be the problem) I have been having problems with my fan and my graphics. I've noticed on itunes that I can't turn the visualizer to full screen. When I turn it on while in full screen mode, the screen just goes black. Also, with fullscreen quicktime trailers, the screen will turn black. Although, my fullscreen does work with other fullscreen movies and my isight. Though, it has problems with dual monitors. I can mirror my image to my TV screen but the image does not show up on my computer screen nor will it allow me to treat the TV as a second monitor. (I've done these things many times before, now they are just totally not working) Also, for some reason the screen occasionally twitches. Just a quick jumpy glitch.

Also, my fan is ALWAYS on. I mean, constantly. It's horrible when I'm talking with a person via iSight and they have problems hearing me because my fan is blaring. Sometimes I have to open up my keyboard and blow on the processor as if my computer is hyper-ventilating.

What in the world could be the problem, panther issues perhaps or signs that my powerbook is ready to crap out on me?

Thanks for reading my post

I totally hear you. It completely bothers me too and I have a 12" PB 867 mhz. It's really not so much the fact that the fan comes on at a lower temperature, but that you have to wait at least 5 minutes for the fan to turn off when you stop doing intensive work! So you're like sitting there staring at your PB with no apps open and you're listening to that f**king fan and IMPATIENTLY waiting for the cpu temp to drop to 47 C!!

Apple please give us an option. Heat or noise? A pref pane could do.

i actually wish the fan in my 15" AlBook would come on more often. the fan is incredibly quiet compared to my previous ghz tibook, and i would prefer the system to not get quite as hot as it does.

Isn't there any geek out there that could make a simple app that would let you set the temperature at which the fan will start (I know you need to be carefull not to set it so it would damage the system)?

Does it already exist?

yeah, i think apple has already done that - they kick on the fan when the system gets too hot!!!

some things to think about when using your pb...

1. maybe you should have the air conditioning on super freeze?
2. maybe you should have a household fan running next to the computer? i'll bet the PB fan will never kick in! :>
3. rest your PB on a flat surface that permits air circulation under the unit. don't throw it on top of a bunch of blankets or a bed sheet and not expect it to get hot.

But does anyone have any ideas about why the visualizer might be messing up? I dont have any pluggins installed in itunes. Full screen should be workin, unless there's something wrong with my graphics card?

i think i should chime in here with my 12" RevA fan dislikes...

ever since upgrading to 10.3.2. my fan has been spinning much faster and louder also...

I understand the machine gets hot but, before I used to be able to live with the noise/fan speed...

it never used to spin this fast or this loud, regardless of what I was doing on it...(application wise)...

sux to be me...

what do you guys think... live with it, wait to see if the next OS X update will fix this issue a bit, or bring it back to Apple...(something I wish not to do, considering the recent increase (here) of unhappy PB owners after bringing in their machines for service...)
